Slickensides, San Francisco, California
Doris Sloan, General Chair for the 1999 GSA Cordilleran Section centennial meeting and Adjunct Professor at the University of California-Berkeley, discusses the fault surface, slickensides, and mullions developed in Franciscan ribbon cherts. This high quarry wall is an exposed fault surface with slickensides that plunge 30 degrees to the northeast. This is the best of numerous northeast-trending slickensided fault surfaces exposed in the Corona Heights area of San Francisco. Photographed at Peixotto Playground.
