San Onofre Breccia, Aliso Beach, California
The Miocene San Onofre breccia and conglomerate is one of the most unusual formations in southern California. The San Onofre Breccia includes blueschist, greenschist, gabbro, and limestone blocks. Although marine, the breccia was probably derived from a nearby fault-bounded highland, which stood to the west of the present shoreline. This rock is so unusual and distinctive, that it provides important constraints for Miocene paleogeographic reconstructions of southern California. Photographed at Aliso Beach County Park in Orange County.
