Jurassic Naknek Formation, Katmai National Park

ID 2192

Marine shales and sandstones of Upper Jurassic Naknek Formation were deposited on a continental shelf and were probably transported from tens of degrees of paleolatitude farther south before docking in Alaska during the late Mesozoic. The bench in the middle reflects differential compaction and welding of the tuff from the June 1912 eruption in the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, Katmai National Park, Alaska.
