Mt. Mageik Volcano, Katmai National Park, Alaska
ID 2191 |
Mt Mageik is one of five active volcanoes bordering the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. The pyroclastic deposits of the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes (foreground) were erupted during a 3-day period in June 1912 and represent one of the largest volcanic events in recorded history. The volcanic deposits attracted broad scientific and popular attention owing to the work of the National Geographic Society expeditions of 1915-1919 led by R.F. Griggs. |
