Cable Tool Rig, Alaska Peninsula

ID 2677

This cable tool rig, circa late 1800's, was located near naturally occurring oil seeps. The oil seeps were located within gently dipping Jurassic marine shales along the crest of an anticline. The small quantities of petroleum were probably produced to supply miners during the Nome gold rush. This area is now administered as the Becharof National Wildlife Refuge and is located about 300 miles southwest of Anchorage.
