Sonoma Coast State Beach and Marine Terraces

Sonoma Coast 1 - portrait mode

Photographed along the Kortum Trail in Sonoma Coast State Beach. The view is north along the trail. Goat Rock is covered with guano in the background. The lower half of the foreground cliff is made of Mesozoic Franciscan mélange and the light yellow brown deposits at the top are the beach deposits of a Quaternary marine terrace. The San Andreas Fault traverses along the base of the cliffs in the distant background.

Sonoma Coast 2 - landscape mode

Same scene as above except you see a little bit more or the horizontal terrace in the right foreground.

Uplifted marine terrace and sea stack 1 (wide-angle view)

Photographed along the Kortum Trail in Sonoma Coast State Beach. The view is southeast along the trail and was taken in November. The flat surface is an uplifted Quaternary marine terrace and the large block of Franciscan was once a wave battered sea stack.

Uplifted marine terrace and sea stack 2 (telephoto view)
